John Mcafee Offers to Decrypt San Bernardino iPhone, Prevent the 'End of America'

Posted: 18 Feb 2016 01:53 PM PST

John Mcafee is offering to decrypt the San Bernardino shooter's iPhone free of charge so that Apple isn't forced to build a back door into its devices. He made the offer to the FBI in an open letter published by TechInsider.

Mcafee notes that the FBI is unable to decrypt the phone because it won't hire the most capable hackers.

"The FBI will not hire anyone with a 24-inch purple mohawk, 10-gauge ear piercings, and a tattooed face who demands to smoke weed while working and won't work for less than a half-million dollars a year."

Apple Releases Updated Version of iOS 9.2.1 to Fix 'Error 53'

Posted: 18 Feb 2016 11:41 AM PST

Apple has released an updated version of iOS 9.2.1 via iTunes to fix an issue that could brick iPhones or iPads serviced by unauthorized repair shops. The Guardian first noticed the issue that was caused by replacement of the Touch ID Home button by an unauthorized technician.

Apple describes what users may encounter:

After you try to update or restore your iOS device in iTunes on your Mac or PC, you might see error 53 in iTunes and "Connect to iTunes" on your device. Error 53 appears when a device fails a security test. This test was designed to check whether Touch ID works properly before the device leaves the factory, and wasn't intended to affect customers.

Apple Launches New iPhone 'Trade Up With Installments' Plan

Posted: 18 Feb 2016 08:04 AM PST

Apple has launched a new iPhone 'Trade Up With Installments' plan that lets users trade in an old iPhone or other smartphone, apply that value to a new iPhone, and pay off the remaining cost of the new iPhone in installments over 24 months. The plan is only available in the U.S. and in Apple Stores, reports CNET.

If you're trading in an iPhone in good working condition, the payments range from about $15 to $35 a month, depending on how many models you jump up to. If you're switching from the iPhone 4 to the 128GB iPhone 6S Plus, for instance, you'll pay $35.37 a month. But if you're moving from an iPhone 5 to an iPhone 6, you'll pay $14.54 a month.

The new program joins Apple's basic trade-in program and iPhone Upgrade Program. The basic trade-in program pays users up to $350 for an older or damaged iPhone. The iPhone Upgrade program lets you get the latest iPhone with AppleCare+ by paying in 24 monthly installments. When a new iPhone comes out you can simply take yours to the Apple Store and trade it in for the new model and restart your monthly payments.

Apple's Chief Chipmaker Johny Srouji Profiled

Posted: 18 Feb 2016 07:44 AM PST

Bloomberg has posted a profile on Apple's Senior Vice President for Hardware Technologies, Johny Srouji. An Israeli who joined Apple after working at Intel and IBM, Srouji speaks Arabic, French, and Hebrew, and is described as compact and intense.

"Hard is good. Easy is a waste of time," he responds when asked about increasingly thin iPhone designs. "The chip architects at Apple are artists, the engineers are wizards," he says. "When designers say, 'This is hard', my rule of thumb is if it's not gated by physics, that means it's hard but doable."

Srouji runs what is probably the most important and least understood division inside the world's most profitable company. Since 2010, when his team produced the A4 chip for the original iPad, Apple has immersed itself in the costly and complex science of silicon. It develops specialized microprocessors as a way to distinguish its products from the competition. The Apple-designed circuits allow the company to customize products to perfectly match the features of its software, while tightly controlling the critical trade-off between speed and battery consumption.

Microsoft Launches 25 Person Group Video Calling for Skype

Posted: 18 Feb 2016 07:19 AM PST

Microsoft has announced the launch of 25 person Skype group video calling. The feature is rolling out now to users on iPhone, iPad, and Android in Western Europe and North America. The roll-out in these markets should be completed over the next week or so with full availability worldwide expected in March.

For the ultimate get together experience, group video calls are in glorious HD quality and optimized specifically for the device you're using, giving a more natural feel to the call. The person talking is displayed front and center and video is immersive and full screen. Audio is also crystal clear, thanks to our SILK Super Wide Band audio codec in our cloud conferencing stack. To achieve this, we're proud to have worked with one of Microsoft's biggest partners, Intel, which helped enable us to optimize SILK Audio specifically for Azure running on Intel processors.

The group video calling feature was previously limited to 5 participants but is now capable of conferencing 25 participants. You can flip between a grid view and a focus view where Skype automatically focuses on the active speaker, or lets you choose which participant to 'Pin' to the stage.

You No Longer Need an @Gmail Email Address to Use Gmail [Video]

Posted: 17 Feb 2016 11:22 PM PST

Google has announced that it's now possible to use Gmail without an @gmail email address.

For the last year, you've been able to access your email from other providers, like Yahoo! Mail or Outlook.com, in the Gmail app on Android. And we've been getting lots of great feedback from those of you that do. Many of you would like more of Gmail's powerful features, like spam protection and inbox organization, on these accounts—but don't want to go through the hassle of changing your email address. We agree. So starting today, if you use Yahoo! Mail or Hotmail/Outlook.com, you now have the option to Gmailify your inbox.

Gmailify links your existing account to Gmail, letting you use all its features without having to leave your current address behind. To use the feature, open the Gmail app, sign in to your email account(s), and enable Gmailify.
